Ricardo Valdez Valentine Jr. (born June 24, 1992) is an American singer, songwriter and rapper, better known by his stage name 6LACK (pronounced “Black”). He was born in Baltimore, Maryland, United States. He and his family moved to Atlanta, Georgia, at the age of five, a city that would have a massive impact on his musical identity. Growing up in Atlanta, he was steeped in a rich hip-hop and R&B culture that inspired him to develop his own creative voice. His father exposed him to recording music at an early age and he started experimenting with music as a kid.
In middle school and high school, 6LACK was known for his battle rap skills, battling classmates and local rappers in freestyle battles. In Atlanta, he rubbed elbows with the rising stars of the city’s cutthroat rap scene. Rap was his entry point, but he started to get into singing, mixing melodic vocals with emotionally truthful lyrics. This combination would become the signature sound that set him apart from other artists.
The Beginning of His Career
After high school, 6LACK attended Valdosta State University for a short time, then dropped out of college after signing his first recording contract in 2011. He moved to further his career to pursue his dream of becoming a professional musician. But his first record deal was a hard one, restricting his creative freedom and leaving him broke for several years. During this time he lived in recording studios while writing and recording music.
He kept on making music through all of this. Finally he decided to break the contract and begin again. But joining forces with the music collective Spillage Village and then signing with Love Renaissance (LVRN) and Interscope Records would give him the creative freedom he had been looking for.
